Feast of St. James · 25–26 July
Festivals and events

When summer arrives and the grain has already turned golden, Cabezas del Pozo gets ready for its big festival. Saint James the Apostle is the village's patron saint, and his festival is well known throughout the area: people say you come here because Cabezas is a cheerful, welcoming village, and living it just once is enough to prove it. It is organised by the Ayuntamiento (Town Hall) of Cabezas del Pozo.
The festival today. The main day begins with mass and the procession. The image of Saint James, on horseback with his sword raised, is carried through the streets to the sound of the gaitilla (a small bagpipe), and in front of the saint the women dance jotas, a tradition the village has brought back in recent years. Afterwards come the aperitif, the reunion of those who live away and come back every summer, and the night dances with a live band.
The festival that keeps the memory. The elders still remember how it used to begin. The night before, children and young people would go round the village collecting pack-saddles, yokes and anything that could burn, piling it up in the middle of the square. At nightfall they lit the bonfire (luminaria), and the boldest jumped over the flames amid shouts and laughter. The next day they danced the «midday dance», in the full heat of July.
Some years the varas de Santiago were also held: when a family wanted to thank the saint for a favour granted, they paid for part of the festival and invited the whole village and the authorities. The last one remembered was in 1956. There were even a few summers of bull-running, soon abandoned because of the danger involved.
Saint James also had his own brotherhood and his own hermitage, on the road to Bernuy, surrounded by poplars. Nothing remains of it today, but the saint still comes out every 25 July to go round his village.
